Distance for Piano Solo

For Solo Piano
Distance for Piano Solo — sheet music cover by Lars Nelissen. Winter landscape.

Distance is an atmospheric and highly expressive piano work, opening with a sense of mystery — as if heard from far away, or remembered from another time. The music unfolds gradually, with a narrative sweep reminiscent of the ballade tradition.

Its language is harmonic and melodic, yet clearly contemporary, shaped by my own musical voice. The central section brings real virtuosic intensity, while the ending rapidly gathers the main ideas once more before dissolving into motion and silence.

Distance is an advanced concert work, comparable in technical demand to Chopin’s Ballades.

Questions about Distance

Yes — both public performance and use in teaching are permitted. The only ask: if you perform Distance publicly, please let Lars know in advance so he can be aware of where the piece is being heard. A short note to mail@pianofantasy.com is enough.

If you're curious about how Lars teaches the piano beyond the score, the Pro Membership is the full school.
