Before deciding how high to lift, we need to clarify what finger lifting actually does
In fast playing, your fingers like to stay near the keys. In training, they often must do the opposite.
High finger preparation is like strength training for clarity and speed: it teaches every finger where to go and how to move quickly from a relaxed, curved position (umbrella). In the first phase, work slowly with an exaggerated preparation of each strike.
Lifting fingers high creates precision, independence, and the reflexes you’ll later use in fast, close-to-the-key playing.
Try this:
- Choose a simple scale or Super Fingers pattern.
- Play it slowly.
- Lift each finger as high as is still comfortable, then strike the key with a quick, lightning-fast movement.
- Listen for clean attacks without any force.
The catch:
- This is training, not a performance technique.
- Phase 1 is big; Phase 3 becomes invisible.
Summary:
Slow tempo + high preparation = fast, clean fingers later.
