Two minutes in, and the passage falls apart
A fast passage can be learned and still fall apart after two minutes. The notes are there, the tempo is there. Then the fingers start to miss and the line turns uneven. Fingers get tired playing piano mostly because the wrist tightens and the arm stays stiff while the fingers work. The hand is holding on where it could be letting go between the notes. The tiredness is real. The explanation is in the wrong place.
Piano finger fatigue is the usual name for it, and it shows up in the same place every time: the fourth and the fifth stop answering, and the passage that was fine at the start of the run-through is uneven at the end of it. The notes did not go anywhere. What changed is what the arm was doing while you played them.
Why "stamina" is the wrong explanation
Most students call it stamina and play the passage again. The tiredness they are naming is real — a hand can be worn out at the end of a page, and physical endurance exists and does improve. What is wrong is where that explanation puts the problem, and what you go and do because of it.
Repetition is how a movement gets into your system. That is not in doubt. Repeat a passage while the arm is holding on, and what gets trained is the holding on.
What repetition cannot do is bring in the relaxations, the strategy, the divisions. That is not something you think your way into while you play. You plan it and you practise it — the relaxations in between, in first-phase practice for the fingers, in second-phase practice for the arm movements. Not just blind repetitions.
That is what makes piano finger stamina the wrong explanation to work from. It sends you back to the same passage with the same coordination, and the coordination is the thing that has to change.
Where the tiredness actually comes from
The fingers get the blame, and they are the place you feel it. But mostly it is the wrist tightening, and the arm staying stiff while the fingers work. Tightening up is what makes you tired.
A wrist that tightens stops being free. The wrist has to follow and let the arm through to the key. A tight one blocks instead, and absorbs the energy on the way. Then the fingers do their own work and the wrist's as well. That is why so much hand tension when playing fast never announces itself while it is happening. You notice it two minutes later, and you notice it in the fingers.
So the tiredness shows in the fingers and mostly starts above them, in the wrist and the lower arm. That is where the work goes.
The strike and the lifting: preparation for the next note
The strike and the lifting of the finger to prepare the next note are two sides of the same coin. You strike, and the finger comes up and gets ready for the note coming next. That lifting is the preparation. Without preparation, you cannot strike fast.
Then, between the preparation for the next note and the strike, there is a small relaxation in the arm. Not a pause in the playing, and nothing added on to it — the sound goes on, the tempo goes on. It is the arm muscles letting go for a split second while the finger is already on its way. And the better you have that, the more articulation you can create within a passage.
That is what makes Horowitz's articulation so great. And Glenn Gould. They have it from nature. With a lot of practice there is something in the playing that creates a little release between the notes, and that gives tremendous good articulation, even in very fast passages.
Like striking a ball: energy taken in the preparation, given away in the strike. Prepare, strike, prepare, strike. That lightning strike results in the release. It should become one natural phenomenon. Two sides of the same coin.
Miss it for two minutes and the hand gets fatigued.
And letting go is not going soft. The fingers stay concentrated — they keep their resistance, they still push the key. The release sits in the arm and the wrist. Loosen the fingers instead and you get spaghetti fingers, which is a different problem and a worse one.
It is easiest to feel at a tempo that gives you the time for it: play slowly and strike each finger fast. I have written that practice out on its own — the umbrella technique, and the relaxation felt between the notes.
The larger arm movements: relaxation across groups of notes
Then there are arm movements that bring relaxation, and at the same time momentum. Momentum, movement, relaxation — again two sides of the same coin. These work at a different size than the lifting between one note and the next. That one is note to note. This one runs across a group of notes, and both are going on in the same passage.
I call this working in divisions — divisions being groups of notes. At the boundary of a division there is preparation and relaxation, both of them together, and the arm arrives at the next group already free.
The movement brings you toward a certain gravity point and eases away from it again. That is the same gravity point I teach in phrasing — the place the music is heading for — and in a phrase, the arm's movement is often organised around exactly the point the line is pulling toward. Finding that point and marking it into your score is a piece of work on its own; here I mean it for what the arm is gathering toward inside a fast figure.
All this feels like waves taking momentum and relax. That is what a long fast passage feels like when it is going well.
Endurance grows out of trained muscles and knowing where to release tension
Endurance grows by combining. By knowing where and how to relax, how to release tension — and at the same time out of repetitions. That part is important too. The muscles need to be trained. Untrained muscles will not be able to do anything. But trained muscles, without knowing what to do, will still become tense and will still eventually break your passages.
So it is both, and the check is simple enough. Play the passage that tires you, and stop when the tiredness arrives. Look at what the wrist and the lower arm are doing: free, or tightened?
Then take that passage slowly, strike each finger fast, and feel the lower arm let go between the notes. Build the tempo back up while that stays in.
Where this is built, step by step
In the Academy this is built in order, and the order matters. The first-phase finger exercises train the lifting and the small relaxation between the notes — hands separate, slow tempo, fast strike, the lower arm letting go after every strike. That layer has to be in the hand first. Then the second-phase exercises add the arm movements, also in divisions — the momentum and the relaxation across the group, practised the same way: slowly, and on purpose.
