A scale can sound perfectly even — as long as you play it slowly. Speed it up, and a small bump appears, evenly spaced, every few notes. Same scale, same fingering, same hand. Only the tempo changed.
That tells you something. The unevenness is not really about the notes, or the fingering, or which end of the scale you start from. It arrives at speed — which means it is a speed problem, something the hand does only when it runs out of time.
What the Thumb Is Being Forced to Do
Play the scale slowly and the thumb has all the time it needs. It prepares early, slides quietly under the hand, and the hand passes smoothly over it — a full, clean crossing with no bump. At a slow tempo this is exactly right, and it is the foundation everything else stands on.
Now speed it up. The full pass-under takes time you no longer have, and the hand tries to do it anyway — forcing the thumb all the way under, below the third or fourth finger, on every crossing. The faster you go, the harder it forces, and the bigger the bump gets.
So the bump at speed is a different problem from the late thumb of slow practice. Here the thumb is not arriving late — it is being asked to travel a full distance there is no longer time for.
Let the Arm Carry the Scale
The fix is not more thumb work. It is to stop asking the thumb to tuck fully under, and to let the arm lead in the direction the scale is travelling — moving up the keyboard as the scale rises, back down as it falls.
When the arm leads the travel, the thumb no longer reaches a hundred percent under. The crossing leaves a tiny gap — but because the forearm is carrying the hand across the keyboard in one continuous motion, and because it is happening fast, the ear never registers a break. The arm covers the join.
It helps to stop thinking of the scale as a ladder climbed rung by rung. Think instead of the arm carrying the hand from one octave to the next — the fingers filling in the notes along the way, the arm doing the travelling.
The Fingers Still Have to Stay Even
There is a second reason scales lose their evenness, and it lives between the crossings. The fingers are simply not equal — the fourth and fifth are the weakest, and the joins from three to four and four to five are where clarity and brilliance quietly slip away.
A clean crossing will not save a scale if the fingers go uneven in between. So the arm-led travel and even fingers are two halves of the same job: the arm handles the crossings, and the weaker fingers are trained until they match the strong ones.
Try It: Practise in Octave Divisions
Work one octave at a time. Take C major, hands separately.
- Play the one-octave scale slowly first, thumb passing quietly, until it is genuinely smooth and even — no bump.
- Now place the hand on the low C, open and prepared, the fingers already in their shape.
- Let the arm carry the hand up to the next C, an octave higher, landing open and ready — the thumb light, not forced under.
- Then let the arm carry it back down to the low C the same way.
- Go up and down, the arm leading the travel, the thumb staying light throughout.
- Between the crossings, keep the fingers even — especially fourth to fifth, where evenness is easiest to lose.
Chase the smooth carry, not the tempo. The speed arrives on its own once the arm is doing the travelling — this is the same reason slow, careful work builds fast playing rather than holding it back.
First the Foundation, Then the Speed Layer
Order matters here, and it is worth being level about it.
Early on, the work is smooth thumb passing and even fingers, practised slowly. That is the foundation, and there is no shortcut past it. The arm-led octave-division work comes later, as the scale speeds up and the full tuck stops being possible.
Alternative fingerings — ways of crossing that avoid the thumb-under entirely — help too, but much later still, once the scale is already secure. They are an advanced refinement, not a beginner's fix; handed to a hand that has not built the basics, they only paper over what was never learned.
